Moses in the Wilderness

Sweetening of the Water

Exodus 15:20-27

20 The prophetess Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and drums. 21 And Miriam was singing to them: “Praise the splendid Lord, who exalted over horses and has cast the riders into the sea.” 22 Then Moses made the house of Israel march from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They came a three days journey in the wilderness and found no water. 23 They came to Marah and could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter—because of this the place was Marah. 24 The people complained against Moses and said to him, “What shall we drink?” 25 He prayed before the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water sweetened. There he taught him laws and judgements, and there he tested him. 26 He said to him, “If you indeed hear the voice of the Lord your God, do what is beautiful before him, and listen to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will not bring upon you all the plagues I brought upon the Egyptians, because I am the Lord healing.” 27 They came to Elim. There were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the water.

Manna from Heaven

Exodus 16:1-3, 11-15, 31-36

1 They picked up from Elim, and all of the congregation of the children of Israel came to the Desert of Sin, between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month at the time the children of Israel went out from Egypt. 2 All of the congregation of the children of Israel murmured about Moses and Aaron in the desert. 3 The children of Israel said to them, “We wish we would have died at the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt as we sat at our pots of meat, ate bread, and were satisfied; you have brought us out into this desert to slay all of the congregation of the children of Israel with hunger.”

11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I heard the complaint of the children of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you are going to be eating meat, in the morning you shall have your fill of bread, and you shall know I am the Lord your God.’” 13 It was evening, and quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning, there had been a mist of dew around the camp. 14 The mist of dew went up, and here on the face of the desert was something fine, flaky, and crusted like frost on the ground. 15 The children of Israel saw it and said to one another, “What is it?” Moses said to them, “This is the bread the Lord gave you to eat.”

It was like white coriander seed, and its taste was like honeycomb. 32 Moses said, “This is the statement the Lord commanded: ‘May a full omer of it be kept for your generations because they will see the food of the desert when I brought you out of Egypt’” 33 Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, pour in it a full omer of manna, and place it before the Lord to be kept for your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded me, Aaron placed it for testimony to be kept. 35 The children of Israel ate manna for forty years until they came to a habitable land; they had eaten manna until they arrived at the edge of the land of Canaan. 36 An omer is a tenth of an ephah.

Nassah and Meribah

Exodus 17:1-7

1 The whole congregation of the children of Israel marched from the desert of Sin by their journey on the word of the Lord’s mouth. They camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 The people quarreled with Moses and said to him, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” 3 The people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses and said to him, “Why did you bring us up from Egypt to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?” 4 Moses cried out before the Lord and said, “What shall I do with these people? They would stone me before long.” 5 The Lord said to Moses, “Work before the people. Take with you some elders of Israel. Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the river, and go. Look, I stand there in front of you on the flint at Horeb. You will strike the flint, water will come out of it, and the people will drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 He called that place Nassah and Meribah because the children of Israel quarreled and because they tested the Lord and said would the Lord be among us or not.

Battle with Amalek

Exodus 17:8-16

8 Amalek came to do battle with Israel at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men for you, and go out. We will do battle with Amalek tomorrow. I, look, am going to stand at the top of the hill, the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did as Moses told him and went to do battle with Amalek. Moses, Aaron, and Hur had gone up to the top of the hill. 11 When Moses was raising his arms, Israel would prevail. When he lowered his arms, Amalek would prevail. 12 Moses’ arms had grown weary, and they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur were upholding his arms, one here and one there. His arms were faithful until the sun set. 13 Joshua defeated Amalek and his people by the mouth of the sword. 14 The Lord said to Moses, “Write this memory in a book and place it before Joshua son of Nun because I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. 15 Moses built an altar and called it, “The Lord is my banner.” 16 He said, “Look, a hand upon the throne. The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1-17

1 The Lord told Moses these statements: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you up from of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods besides me. 4 You shall not make for yourself any idol and any form in Heaven above, on earth below, or in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them, because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the sins of fathers upon children to the third and fourth generation of my haters, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 You shall not vow in the name of the Lord your God falsely because the Lord does not acquit those who vow in his name falsely. 8 Remember the Sabbath day for its holiness. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10 The seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work—you, your son, your daughter, your servant, your handmaid, your livestock, or the sojourner in your town—11 because in six days the Lord made Heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them. He rested the seventh day. For this, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it. 12 Honor your father and your mother so your days may be long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 You shall not desire your neighbor’s house; you shall not desire your neighbor’s wife, servant, handmaid, bull, donkey, or anything your neighbor has.”

Golden Calf

Exodus 32:15-20

15 Moses turned and went down the mountain, the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets written on both sides, written here and there. 16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved upon the tablets. 17 Joshua heard the sound of the people fighting and said to Moses, “There is a sound of battle in the camp.” 18 Moses said, “It is not the sound spoken by champions nor the sound of the weak. It is the sound of sin I hear.” 19 When he neared the camp, he saw the calf and cymbals. Moses seethed, cast the tablets from his hands, and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf they made, burned it in the fire, filed it with a file until it was ground like dust, scattered it on the water, and gave it to the house of Israel to drink.

Rewriting the Tablets

Exodus 34:1-9

1 The Lord said to Moses, “Cut yourself two stone tablets like the former ones, and write on the tablets the statements that were on the former tablets you broke. 2 Be prepared in the morning, come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and stand there on the top of the mountain. 3 May no one come up with you, may no one be seen throughout all the mountain, and may neither flocks nor bulls graze in front of that mountain.” 4 He cut two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses rose early in the morning, went up on Mount Sinai as the Lord commanded him, and took in his hand the two stone tablets. 5 The Lord descended in the cloud, stood with him there, and called his name, “The Lord.” 6 The Lord passed before him, and called, “The Lord, the Lord, the merciful, hovering, long-suffering, abounding in goodness and true justice, 7 keeping goodness for the thousandth generation, forgiving sins and debts, justifying the unjust, visiting the sins of fathers upon the children and upon the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 Then Moses hurried, fell to the earth, and worshiped. 9 He said, “If I have found mercies in your eyes, my Lord, my Lord will now go among us because the people are stiff-necked. Forgive our debts and sins, and you shall make us your heirs.”

Vine of the Promised Land

Numbers 13:24-33

24 They came to the Wadi of the Cluster, cut from there a shoot and a single cluster of grapes, and carried it on a pole between two along with some pomegranates and figs. 25 They had called that place the Wadi of the Cluster because of the cluster the children of Israel cut down from there. 26 They returned from spying out the land after forty days, 27 came to Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the wilderness of Paran at Raqem, gave word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruits of the land. 28 They told him and said, “We went to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 29 But the people residing in the land are strong, the towns are strong and quite large, and we even saw the sons of giants there. 30 Amalek resides in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites reside in the mountains; and the Canaanites reside by the shore and along the Jordan.” 31 Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We shall indeed go up and occupy it because we are capable.” 32 The men who had gone up with him said, “We cannot go up against this people, because they are stronger than we.” 33 They brought out a report of the land spied by the children of Israel and said, “The land we passed through and spied is a land devouring its inhabitants, and all the men we saw in it are of size. 33 There we saw the giants, the sons of giants, and those from giants. We were in their eyes like locusts, so we were in their eyes.”

Rebellion

Numbers 14:1-10

1 The whole congregation clamored and lifted their voice in weeping, and the people cried a great weeping that night. 2 All the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron on that day, and the whole congregation said to them: “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land to fall by the sword, and for our women and baggage to become spoil? It was better for us when we were residing in Egypt!” 4 Each man said to the other, “Come, let us make a leader and return to Egypt.” 5 Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the whole congregation’s assembly of the children of Israel. 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among the spies of the land, had torn their garments 7 and said to the whole congregation of the children of Israel: “The land that we crossed into to spy is a very good land. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will both bring us into this land and give us that land flowing with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land, because they are our bread; for their strength has passed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” 10 The whole congregation said to stone them with stones, but the glory of the Lord had been revealed in the cloud at the Tent of Meeting in the eye of all the children of Israel.

Judgment against Korah, Dathan, and Abiram

Numbers 16:19-27

19 Korah assembled the whole congregation against them at the door of the appointment tent. The glory of the Lord appeared to the whole congregation. 20 The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron and said to them, 21 “Separate yourselves from this congregation, and I shall destroy them in the hour.” 22 They fell on their faces, and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one person sin and rage be upon the whole congregation?” 23 The Lord spoke to Moses and said to him, 24 “Tell all of the congregation, ‘Get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’” 25 Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He spoke with the congregation and said to them, “Separate yourselves from the tents of these sinful men, and do not approach anything of theirs or else you will be struck with all their sins.” 27 They separated from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came came forth standing at the door of their tents along with their wives, their children, and their baggage. 28 Moses said, “In this you shall know the Lord sent me forth to do all these deeds; it has not been of my mind. 29 If they should die the death of everyone or be sentenced with the sentence of everyone, it was not the Lord who sent me forth. 30 But if the Lord creates creation, the ground will open its mouth and swallow them along with everything they have. They will go down alive into Sheol, and you shall know these men angered the Lord.” 31 When Moses finished speaking all these statements, the ground under them opened. 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households—everyone who belonged to Korah and all their possessions. 33 They along with all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol; the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

Desert of Zin

Numbers 20:1-13

1 The children of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin on the first month, and the people resided in Raqem. Miriam died there and was buried there. 2 There was no water for the people to drink, and the people gathered together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 The people quarreled with Moses and Aaron and said to them, “If only we died in the pestilence of our brothers before the Lord! 4 Why have you brought the congregation of the Lord to the wilderness for us and our livestock to die there? 5 Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this bad place? It is no place for seed, nor vines, figs, pomegranates, nor water to drink.” 6 Moses and Aaron came from the congregation to the door of the Tent of Meeting and fell on their faces, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord spoke to Moses and said, 8 “Take the staff, and gather the congregation, you and your brother Aaron. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give its water. I shall bring water to them from the rock for them; I will give drink to the congregation and their livestock. 9 Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron gathered all the congregation at the rock, and he said to them, “Listen now, rebels, shall we bring you water from this rock?” 11 Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff. Much water came forth, and the congregation and their livestock drank. 12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me to consecrate myself before children of Israel, for this you shall not bring this congregation into the land I gave them.” 13 These are the waters of quarrel, where the children of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and by which he showed his holiness.

Bronze Serpent

Numbers 21:1-9

1 When the Canaanite, the king of Godar, who dwelled in the North, heard Israel was coming by the way of spies, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. 2 Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will indeed hand over this people, we will destroy their towns.” 3 The Lord heard the voice of Israel and handed over the Canaanites, and they destroyed them and their towns; so the place was called Hermah. 4 They picked up from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom, and the people’s soul became anxious on the way. 5 The people murmured against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no food and no water, and we loathe this little bread.” 6 The Lord sent forth basilisks among the people. They bit the people, and many from Israel died. 7 The people came to Moses and said to him, “We sinned by murmuring against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, and he will take away the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a basilisk of bronze, and set it on a sign. All whom the serpent bit shall look at it and live.” 9 Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it on a sign. Whenever a serpent bit a man, he would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

Balaam’s Refusal

Numbers 22:7-19

7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went, their oracles in their hands. They came to Balaam and told him Balak’s message. 8 He said to them, “Stay here tonight, and I will give you word just as the Lord speaks to me.” The officials of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 God came upon Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 Balaam said to God, “King Balak son of Zippor of Moab has sent for me and said to me: 11 ‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt and covered the face of the earth. Now, come curse them. Perhaps I shall be able to battle them and destroy them.’” 12 God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them nor curse the people, because they are blessed.” 13 Balaam rose in the morning and said to the officials of Balak, “Go to your land, for the Lord does not want to let me go with you.” 14 The officials of Moab rose, went to Balak, and said to him, “Balaam does not want to come with us.” 15 Balak once again sent forth embassies of officials, more distinguished than these. 16 They came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak son of Zippor: ‘You shall not be hindered from coming to me, 17 for I will surely honor you well, and do whatever you tell me. Come, curse this people for me.’” 18 Balaam replied to the embassies of Balak, “If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the mouth of the Lord my God for something less or greater. 19 Therefore, stay also here tonight, and I shall know what he again speaks to me.”

Balaam's Ass

Numbers 22:20-40

20 God came upon Balaam that night and said to him, “If these men have come to call you, get up and go with them. Only do the deed I say to you.” 21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his jenny, and went with the officials of Moab. 22 God’s anger was kindled upon him because he was going, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to be an adversary to him. He was riding on the donkey, his two boys with him. 23 The jenny saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, a drawn sword held in his hand. The jenny turned off the road and went into the field. Balaam struck the jenny to turn her onto the road. 24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in the path of the vineyard, a hedge here and a hedge there. 25 The jenny saw the angel of the Lord, pressed against the wall, and scraped Balaam’s foot against the wall. He struck it again. 26 The angel of the Lord again crossed and stood in a narrow place, a place with no way to turn to the right or left. 27 When the jenny saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam’s rage was kindled, and he struck the jenny with his staff. 28 The Lord opened the mouth of the jenny, and she said to Balaam, “What did I do to you, that you have struck me these three times?” 29 Balaam said to the jenny, “Because you mocked me! If I had a sword in my hands, I would kill you now!” 30 But the jenny said to Balaam, “Am I not your jenny, which you have ridden from your youth to today? Have I ever done this to you?” And he said, “No.” 31 The Lord uncovered the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, his drawn sword in his hand. He kneeled and bowed on his face. 32 The angel of the Lord said, “Why have you struck your jenny these three times? Look, I have come out as an adversary to you because I directed your way to me. 33 The jenny saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away from me, I would have killed you now and spared her life.” 34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road against me. Now if it is evil in your eyes, I will return.” 35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men; but speak only do the deed I tell you.” Balaam went on with the officials of Balak. 36 Balak heard Balaam came and went out to meet him at the village of Moab, on the boundary formed by the Arnon, at the edges of the boundary. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Look, I sent for you to call you. Wherefore did you not come to me? Perhaps you said I could not manage honoring you?” 38 Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I came to you. Now indeed am I to say something other than the statement God puts in my mouth? That I say.” 39 Balaam went with Balak and entered the village of Hezruth. 40 Balak sacrificed bulls and sheep and sent them to Balaam and to the officials who were with him. 41 When it was morning, Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth Baal, and he saw from there the sum of the people.

Balaam’s Denial

Numbers 23:17-27

17 He came to him. Standing beside his burnt offerings, the officials of Moab with him, Balak said to him, “What did the Lord say?” 18 Balaam lifted his parable and said: “Rise, Balak, and hear. Listen to me, O son of Zippor. 19 God is not a man who would lie nor a son of man who would be counselled. He says and does. His word stands forever. 20 Look, I have be led to bless and will not reverse the blessing. 21 I do not see the sin in Jacob nor do I look at the malice in Israel. The Lord their God is with him, the praise of his king in him. 22 God, who brought them out of Egypt, is in his strength and in his height. 23 Because there is no spell in Jacob, no oracle in Israel, at this time, it shall be said to Jacob and Israel what God does. 24 Look, a people rising up like a lion, and like a lion, lifting himself up! He will not not lie down until he eats the prey and drinks the blood of the slain.” 25 Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse him at all, and do not bless him at all.” 26 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘I will do all the Lord says to me’?” 27 Balak said to Balaam, “Come, I will lead you to another place; perhaps it will be beautiful in God’s eyes. Curse him for me there.”

Death of Moses

Deuteronomy 34:1-12; Jude 1:9

1 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of the height opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead Gad unto Dan, 2 all Naphtali, all the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the other sea, the south, 3 the valley in the plain of Jericho, the town of palm trees until Zoar. 4 The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I said, 'I will give it to your offspring.’ I showed it to you in your eyes, and you shall not enter there.” 5 Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the word of the Lord’s mouth. 6 He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor. No one knows his tomb to this day. 7 Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his eye did not grow heavy, and his cheeks did not wrinkle. 8 The children of Israel wept for Moses in the Moab plains thirty days. The days of weeping in mourning for Moses ended, 9 and Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. The children of Israel heard him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 There has yet to stand a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face: 11 from all the signs and wonders the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh, all his servants, all his land, 12 and for all of his strong hand and all the great display Moses did in the eye of all of Israel.

9 But Michael, chief of angels, who was with the Backbiter when he was contending for the body of Moses, did not dare bring condemnation of slander against him but said, “The Lord will rebuke you!”
