Job
Job's Righteousness
Job 1:1-5
1 There was a man named Job in the land of Uz. A blameless and righteous man, he feared God and turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 His possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and very many servants. This man was the greatest of all the sons of the east. 4 His sons would go and hold feasts in one another's houses each day; and they would send for and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 And when the feast days drew near, Job would send for them, sanctify them, rise early in the morning, and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “It may be that my children sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job would do all days.

Satan's First Challenge
Job 1:6-12
6 One day the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, and Satan also came among with them to stand before the Lord. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered and said to the Lord, “Circling the world and walking in it.” 8 The Lord said to Satan, “Behold, you set your heart on my servant Job, like whom are none on the earth: blameless, upright, God-fearing, and turning from evil.” 9 Satan answered and said to the Lord, “In vain, however, Job fears the Lord. 10 You have covered your hand upon him, his house, his children, and everthing he has everywhere. You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are much in the land. 11 However, stretch out your hand and near everything he has if he will not curse you to your face.” 12 The Lord said to Satan, “Behold, everything he has I betray into your hands. Only do not stretch out your hand upon him.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Job's Ordeal
Job 1:13-22
13 One day Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking in the eldest brother’s house. 14 An angel had come to Job and said to him, “The bulls were leading the plow, and the donkeys were feeding beside them, 15 and a robber fell on them and led them away. The boys were killed by the sword, and I alone escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was speaking, another came and said to him, “The fire of God has fallen from heaven, smouldered on the sheep and the shepherds, and consumed them. I alone escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was speaking, another came and said to him, “The Chaldeans have divided into three parts, fallen upon the camels, and led them away. They have killed the boys by the sword, and I alone escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was speaking, another came and said to him, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a powerful wind had come across the desert, struck the four corners of the house, and fallen on the youth. They died, and I alone escaped to tell you.” 20 Job arose, tore his mantle, shaved his head, fell on the ground, and worshiped. 21 He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord has given, and the Lord has taken. The name of the Lord will be blessed.” 22 In all this Job did not sin nor blaspheme God.

Job 2:1-6
1 One day the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to stand before the Lord. 2 The Lord said to Satan, “From where did you come?” Satan answered and said to the Lord, “Circling the world and walking in it.” 3 The Lord said to Satan, “Behold you set your heart on my servant Job, like whom are none on the earth: blameless, upright, God-fearing, and turning from evil. Until now he perseveres in his integrity and you incite me on him to destroy him in vain.” 4 Satan answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! Everything a man has he gives for his own sake and to be saved. 5 But stretch out your hand and touch his flesh or his bone; he shall but curse you to your face.” 6 The Lord said to Satan, “Behold, I betray into your hands. Only guard his soul.” 7 Satan went out from before the face of the Lord and struck Job with bad sores from the sole of his foot to his brain.

Job Visited
Job 2:8-13
8 Job took an earthen vessel with which to scrape himself and was sitting on the ashes. 9 His wife also said to him, “Till now you preserve in your integrity? Curse God, and die.” 10 He said to her, “You spoke as any one of the foolish speak. We have received the good of God. Shall we not receive the bad?” In all this, Job did not sin nor did he blaspheme God with his lips. 11 Three friends of Job heard of all this evil that came upon him and met. Each from his place came to him: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They met together to come, fill his heart, and console him. 12 They raised their eyes from a distance and did not recognize him. Then they raised their voices and wept. Each tore his robes, and they scattered dust upon their heads toward the sky. 13 They sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one said a word, for they saw his affiliction prevailed over him well.

Eliphaz’ Response
Job 22:1-11
1 Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 2 “With God do you say you are a man equaled with him in wisdom? 3 What gain is it that you perfect your ways out of fear of him? 4 He will slay you and enter into judgement with you. 5 Behold, evil is great and there is no end to your sins 6 because you took the constant one of your brothers in vain and have stripped the clothes of the naked. 7 You have not given water to the buffeted and have kept bread from the hungry. 8 There is a man who sows for himself the land, and the violent take it away. 9 You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of the orphan you have seasoned. 10 For this, traps surround you, and fear shook you from peace. 11 Where is the darkness? You did not see, and a flood of water shall cover you.

Bildad’s Response
Job 8:1,11-19; 25:2-6
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:
11 “Does papyrus grow in a thirsty place, or does the reed sprout where there is no water? 12 While in its fruit, it is not plucked, and before each grass it withers. 13 Such are the paths of all who forget God. The hope of the heathen shall perish. 14 His confidence shall be cut. His home is a spider’s house; 15 he will lean against his house, and it will not stand. He will seize it, and it will not endure 16 like moisture before the sun. 17 Upon the gravel, his roots shall recline. He shall see a house of stones 18 if they uproot him from his place. He shall lie about it and say to him, ‘I did not see you.’ 19 Behold, that is to say, he searches all of his ways and from dust another shall spring forth.”
2 “Dominion and fear are with God; he makes peace in his heights. 3 There is no number to his force. Upon whom does his light not dawn? 4 How can a son of man be acquitted before God? Or how can one woman-born be vindicated? 5 Behold, the moon cannot be acquitted nor the stars vindicated before him. 6 Truly, man is a maggot; the son of man, a worm.”

Zophar’s Response
Job 9:1-6; 20:4-11
1 Zophar the Naamathite answered and said: 2 “He does not answer in many words, nor is a man speaking in statements justified. 3 Behold, at your dead words, they shall be silent. You speak, and there is no one preventing you. If you mock, there is no one rebuking you. 4 You say, ‘I have behaved rightly. I was pure in the eyes of yourself.’ 5 However, who did it? God used to give word, raise his lips with you, 6 and show you the secrets of wisdom. For there are recesses to wisdom. You knew God would forgive your sins.
4 You have known this from old, since Adam was created on earth, since he made man upon the earth: 5 the glory of the wicked is from within them, and the joy of the godless is but for a small time. 6 If he ascends to heaven, its height, and his head reaches to the clouds, 7 like the whirlwind he shall perish forever. Those that saw him shall say, ‘Where is he?’ 8 Like a dream, he shall fly and not be found. He shall flee like a vision of the night. 9 The eye that saw him will not again see him, nor will they look again at his place. 10 His children shall be broken by poverty, and his hands reach to his offspring. 11 His bones, full of marrow, shall sleep with him upon the earth.

Job's First Response
Job 29:1; 31:1-15
1 Job again spoke his speech and said:
1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes to not notice a virgin. 2 What is God’s portion above and God’s heritage on high? 3 But the iniquitous have destruction and strangeness is upon the doers of inquity. 4 That is, he saw my ways and has numbered all my steps. 5 If I have walked with lies, if my feet rushed to run in deceit, 6 he will weigh me in a balance of truth, and God will know my integrity 7 if my steps have turned aside from the way, if my heart followed my eyes, if anything clinged to me. 8 But if I sowed, then I ate. If I planted, then I grew and harvested. 9 If my heart was enticed by a strange woman, if I have lain in wait at my neighbor’s door… 10 But my wife has ground for others and baked in another place. 11 For that is a sin; that is an eye of stratagem. 12 It is a fire consuming down to Abaddon. It shall burn all my harvest. 13 If I have rejected the cause of my servant or handmaid when they brought a complaint against me, 14 but I said what shall I do when God rises up? Once he commands, what shall I answer? 15 Behold, in the womb he made me, his servant. In a matrix he has fashioned me.

Job 32:6; 35:2-16
6 Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: “Because my days are fewer than yours, and you are elders, for this, I feared and shook to show you my mind.
2 “Do you consider with justice that you said, ‘I am justified by God.’ 3 If you said, what use are you to yourself and what is the advantage of condemning you, 4 I will give you word and your friends with you. 5 Look at the heavens and inspect the clouds, higher than you. 6 If you sin, what do you do to him? If your iniquity is much, what will you do to him? 7 If you are righteous, what use are you to him, or what does he take from you? 8 Your wickedness is your own, and your righteousness is your own. 9 Out of the many injustices, they speak and bellow from much iniquity. 10 They do not say, ‘Where is God, who made us, who gave thought in the night?’ 11 He made us wiser than the animal of the earth and bird of the sky. 12 There they bellow, but he does not answer them 13 because of the pride of the evil. God does not hear in vain, nor does God consider it. 14 Even if you said you do not consider him, judge before him and supplicate to him. 15 So now his rage does not command and does not displease the soul. 16 Job opens his mouth in vainly. He multiplies words without knowledge.”

Who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what stands its crossing or who dropped its cornerstone, 7 created together the stars of dawn (all the the sons of angels sounded), 8 shut the gates of the sea, made it gush forth from the matrix, and come forth as he placed it, 9 made the clouds its garment, and fog its swaddling band, 10 made for it a portion, made gates and locks, 11 and said, ‘Thus far shall you come and no more. Here you shall tarry in the pride of your waves.’?

Do you know which is the place of dawn 13 to hold the fringes of earth and so the wicked shall be thrown out of it? 14 Their body will change like clay, and they will stand like a garment. 15 Their light is withheld from the sinners, and the raised arm is broken. 16 Did you enter the depths of the sea or walk in the foundations of the deep? 17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you and the gates of deep darkness? 18 Did you see all the breadth of the earth? Tell me if you know all this. 19 Which way dwelt the light, and where is the place of darkness 20 if you know its border and the path of its home? 21 If you know when were you born and the number of your days if they are great? 22 Did you enter the storehouses of snow, or have you yourself seen the storehouses of hail 23 saved for the time of trouble and the day of war’s battle? 24 Or which way does the light divide and does the wind go out upon the earth?

25 “It was the vision and the voice 26 to bring down rain upon land of no one and in the desert without man, 27 to satisfy all offspring and to sprout the bringing forth of grass? 28 Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops? 29 From whose womb did the ice and dew come forth, and who has given birth to the hoarfrost of heaven? 30 The waters harden like stone, and the face of the deep holds. 31 Do you hold the faces of Pleiades or see Orion’s path? 32 Behold, shall you lead forth the Calf in its season or stand in the face of Aldebaran? 33 Do you know the law of the heavens or place the law on the earth? 34 Do you lift your voice on the clouds and cover them with much water? 35 Do you send forth lightning, going and saying to you, ‘Behold, we stand.’? 36 Who put wisdom undercover? Or who gave sight to understanding? 37 Who numbered the clouds in his wisdom? Who has set the pillars of heaven? 38 Who poured dust upon the earth, and who has established the crags? 39 Who gave food to the lion or has satisfied the soul of lions? 40 Who multiplied the animal of the wild? 41 Who gives the raven its food because its children cry to God and are weary from lack of food?

The Hoofed Animals
Job 39:1-12
1 “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth in the crags and the deer conceive? 2 Do you keep the number of months and know the time of their birth 3 and when they bend and give birth? 4 Their children grow and are weaned. 5 Who forsook the freeborn ass and saved his yoke from him 6 to make the plain his home and the salt place for his dwelling? 7 He laughs at the many villages and does not fear the sound of the authorities. 8 In the many mountains are his pasture and treads on every green. 9 Is the buffalo willing to serve you? Or does he spend the night at your road? 10 Can you tie the yoke on the buffalo’s nape, or does he lead the plow in the rough place? 11 Do you depend on him because his strength is much? Will you leave upon him your labor? 12 Do you believe he is cleaning your threshing floor and brining your grain?

The Ostrich
Job 39:1-12
13 “The ostrich is full of herself. She flies, comes, and acquires. 14 She leaves her eggs on the earth; upon the dust she warms them. 15 She forgets because there may be a foot of a bird or animal of the earth that tramples it. 16 She multiples children that are not hers and vainly labors without fear 17 because God multipled wisdom and did not allot her understanding. 18 In the height, she shall ride like a date palm. She laughs at the horse and his rider.

The Horse
Job 39:19-35
19 “Do you give the horse his heroism? Do you clothe his neck with weapons? 20 Do you shake him like the locust or frighten him in fear? 21 He digs deeply, exults mightily, and goes out to meet weapons. 22 He laughs at the pit and does not fear. He does not turn his face from the sword. 23 Upon him the quiver boasts: the flashing spear and the javelin. 24 With shaking and rage, he runs on the ground. He does not fear the sound of the trumpet. 25 At the sound, he says, ‘Hurrah!’ From a distance he smells war and shakes at captains with his neigh. 26 Was the hawk from your wisdom? He spread his wings toward the south? 27 At the word of your mouth does the eagle rise and raise his nest on the cliff? 28 He alights and spends the night upon the cliff’s jag. 29 From his hunt, he is sustained. His eyes see afar. 30 His fledglings lap blood, and he is there where the killed are killed.” 31 The Lord answered and said to Job: 32 “The advice of God is much. Who rebukes God giving word?” 33 Job answered and said to the Lord: 34 “I took back what I responded. I placed my hands upon my mouth. 35 One thing I have spoken, I shall not give word, and others I shall not speak again.”

God's Challenge
Job 40:1-9
1 The Lord answered and said to Job from the whirlwind: 2 “Do gird your loins like a hero. I shall ask you, and I will make you know. 3 But if you cancel me, do you condemn me to be justified? 4 Have you an arm like God’s? Do you thunder with a voice like his? 5 Wear majesty and heroism. Wrap yourself with glory and excellence. 6 Pour the anger of your rage, see each proud one, and abase him. 7 Cast sinners in their place. 8 Bury them in the dust together. Imprison their faces in the dust. 9 I shall also praise you once your right hand has saved you.

The Behemoth
Job 40:10-19
10 “Behold the behemoth, which I made with you. It eats grass like a bull. 11 Its strength is in its back. 12 It erects its tail like a cedar. The nerves of his thighs are erect. 13 His bones are strong like copper and like iron. 14 He is the first of all God’s creations who made him to make war. 15 Many moutains are carried by him, and all wild animals beneath his shadow sleep. 16 Behind the reed he crouches. 17 The shadows surround him, and the willows of the wadi surround him. 18 If the river jumps, he does not tremble. He trusts the Jordan pours in his mouth. 19 Shall one take him in his clouds? Shall one hold him in the net?

The Leviathan
Job 41:1-21
1 “Can you depart while he awakens? What before me shall rise? 2 What before me shall I follow? Beneath all heaven is mine. 3 I shall not be silent about his strength and the nerves of his heroism. 4 Who revealed the face of his garment, and once the net falls, 5 who comes? Who opens the gate of his mouth? The gums of his teeth are fear so in the wadi 6 his mouth is tied, bound, and sealed. 7 They approach each other, and the wind does not enter among them. 8 They cleave to each other and are held and not separated. 9 His eyes are full of light. His eyes are like the rays of dawn. 10 From his mouth lamps come forth like coals of fire and like sparks of fire aflame. 11 Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke like the flame of an ardent pot. 12 His soul shall kindle coals. Sparks come forth from his mouth. 13 Strength lodges in his neck and before him fear shall exult. 14 His flesh is praised, fat, and reclined. 15 His heart does not shake, poured like a stone and firm like flint. 16 Out of fear of him, the strong shake and the firm shall bow. 17 The blade’s enrance cannot stand. He lifts the lances of captains. 18 He considers iron as a straw and brass as wood the shipworm falls on. 19 He does not flee from the bow. He considers the stones of slings as stubble. 20 He laughs at the javelin and considers the abyss as dry land. 21 His force walks upon the dust.

Job's Repentance and Intercession
Job 42:1-9
1 Job answered and said to the Lord: 2 “I know you are able to do all things, and your mind is not hidden from me. 3 Who is this who determines with words without knowledge? Therefore, you showed me I did neither notice nor know the great things from you. 4 Hear me, and I will speak. I shall question you. Make me know. 5 I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear. Now my eye, behold, has seen you. 6 Therefore, I shall be silent and repent on dust and ashes.” 7 After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two companions, for you have not spoken justice before me as my servant Job has. 8 Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to my servant Job, and take up for yourselves an offering. My servant Job shall pray for you. For him I shall not deal with you with reproach, because you have not spoken of me justice as my servant Job has done.” 9 Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord said to them, and the Lord did before the face of Job.

Job's Restoration
Job 42:1-9
10 The Lord had restored Job’s seizures when he was praying for his friends, and the Lord added to everything Job had twofold. 11 All his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before came to him. They grieved for him and consoled him from all the bad things the Lord brought to him. Each gave him an ewe and a gold ring. 12 The Lord had blessed the end of Job better than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys. 13 He had seven sons and three daughters: 14 he named the first Imoma, the second Qatsua, and the third Qarnafukh. 15 One could not find women as beautiful as Job’s daughters in all the land. Their father gave them an inheritance with their brothers. 16 Job lived after this one hundred and forty years and saw his children and his children’s children—four generations. 17 Job grew old, full of days, and died.
