Voice in the Wilderness
Luke 3:1-6
1 Then in the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar’s reign and during Pontius Pilate’s governorship in Judea, when one of the leaders, Herod, was in Galilee, his brother Philip, one of the four leaders, was in Iturea in the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias, one of the four leaders, was in Abilene, 2 in the chief-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God was upon John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He came into all of the region around Jordan while he was proclaiming the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah who said, “A voice crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord and make straight the plain. 5 All of the valleys shall be filled, and all the mountains and hills shall be softened. The steep will be flat; the rugged place, the plain. 6 All flesh shall see the life of God.’”

John's Testimony
John 1:7-18
7 This man had come for the testimony to testify to the light so all might be faithful to his hand. 8 He was not the light, but one testifying to the light. 9 For there was the light of truth, enlightening all, coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was by his hand, but the world had not known him. 11 He had come to his own, and his own did not receive him. 12 To those who received him, he had given authority to be the sons of God: to those faithful to his name, 13 those not from blood, nor will of flesh, nor will of man, but from God had been born. 14 The Word was flesh and dwelled with us. We saw his glory—glory like that of the only one who from the Father is full of goodness and rectitude. 15 John had testified to him, cried out, and said, “This is he whom I said comes after me and was before me because he was prior to me. 16 From his fullness, we all take: goodness in place of goodness. 17 For the law has been given by the hand of Moses, but truth and goodness by the hand Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only Son who is from his Father’s bosom has related him to us.

John's Witness
John 1:19-28
19 This is John’s witness when the Judeans sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, did not deny, but confessed, “No, I am not the Christ.” 21 They asked him again, “Who then? Are you Elijah.” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He said, “No.” 22 They said to him, “And who are you so we might give account to those who have sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice that cries within the wilderness, ‘Make smooth the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah has said.” 24 Those who were sent by the Pharisees asked him and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” 26 John answered and said to them, “With water I baptize. Among you stands he whom you do not know. 27 This is he who comes after me and was before me. He is the one of whom I am unworthy to untie the laces of his shoes.” 28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

John's Condemnation
Matthew 3:4-10
4 Now then John had clothing of camels’ hair and bound a belt of leather on his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea and every region that surrounds the Jordan would go out to him. 6 They would be baptized by him in the Jordan River as they were confessing their sins. 7 Then when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees were coming to be baptized, he said to them, “Brood of vipers. Who has told you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Work then the fruits deserving of repentance, 9 and do not suppose and say to yourselves, ‘Abraham is father to us.’ I say to you God can from these stones raise sons of Abraham. 10 Behold, the axe is set upon the root of trees. Therefore, every tree that does not make good fruits is going to be cut and fall into the fire.”

John's Preaching
Luke 3:10-18
10 The crowds were asking him and saying, “What then shall we do?” 11 He answered and said to them, “He that has two tunics shall give to him that has none, and he that has provisions shall do likewise.” 12 Publicans also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13 He had then said to them, “Do not demand more than what is prescribed you demand.” 14 The soldiers of the army would ask and say, “What shall we also do?” He would say to them, “Do not do harm anyone or be harsh to anyone. Your salaries will be enough for you.” 15 Then when the people were conjecturing about John, all were thinking in their hearts whether he was the Christ. 16 John answered and said to them, “I, look, baptize you with water. But one stronger than I comes after me: I am not worthy to untie the laces of his shoes. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17 He holds the winnow fan in his hand and cleans his threshing floors. He gathers the wheat in his barns and burns the hay in fire that does not quench.” 18 He would teach many other things as well and would instill hope in the people.

John’s Encounter with Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him, and he said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘A man comes after me and was before me because he is before me. 31 I had not known him except that he shall be known to Israel. For this I came so that I may baptize with water.”

Retreat in the Wilderness
Luke 4:1; Mark 1:12-13; Matthew 4:2
1 As Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit, he turned from the Jordan, and the Spirit took him to the wilderness.
12 At once the Spirit made him go out to the desert. 13 And there in the desert for forty days, he was tempted by Satan. He was there with animals, and angels were serving him.
2 He fasted forty days and forty nights.

Calling of Peter and Andrew
John 1:35-42
35 The next day John was standing along with two of his disciples. 36 He looked at Jesus walking and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 His two disciples heard him speak and followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, saw them following him, and said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to him, “Our master, where do you stay?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” Then they came, saw where he stayed, and were with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. 40 Now one of them who heard of John and followed Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon. 41 He saw his brother Simon first and said to him, “We found the Messiah.” 42 He brought him to Jesus, and Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of Jonah: you shall be called Rock.”

Calling of Philip and Nathaniel
John 1:43-51
43 On the next day Jesus wanted to go forth to Galilee, found Philip, and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Simon. 45 Philip had found Nathaniel and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the law and in the prophets. He is Jesus, son of Joseph of Nazareth. 46 Nathaniel said to him, “Can something good be from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and you will see.” 47 And Jesus saw Nathaniel as he was coming toward him and said of him, “Here indeed is a son of Israel in whom there is no guile.” 48 Nathaniel said to Him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus said to him, “Before Philip called you, while you were beneath the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathaniel answered and said to him, “My master, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you beneath the fig tree,’ you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” 51 He said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, henceforth you will see Heaven opening and God’s angels ascending and descending toward the Son of Man.”
