Abraham

The Calling of Abraham
Genesis 12:1-8

1 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your land and from whence you were born and from your father’s house to the land I shall show you. 2 I shall make you a great people, bless you, and magnify your name. 3 I shall bless your blessers and will curse your cursers. All of the tribes of the earth will be blessed by you and by your offspring.” 4 Abram did as the Lord told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he had went from Haran. 5 Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his nephew, all the possessions they had possessed, and souls that worked in Haran. Then they set forth to go the land of Canaan and came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Mamre. At that time the Canaanites were settled in the land. 7 The Lord revealed himself to Abram and said to him, “To your offspring I shall give this land.” He built there an altar to the Lord, who had revealed himself to him. 8 Then he moved from there to the mountain to the east of Bethel, pitched his tent with Bethel in the west and Ai in the east, and there built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

Abram in Egypt
Genesis 12:10-20

10 There was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to reside there because the famine strengthened much in the land. 11 It was when he was about to enter Egypt he said to his wife Sarai, “Look, I know you are a beautiful woman in appearance. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife,’ killing me and letting you live. 13 Say you are my sister because it will go well for me because of you and I myself will live because of you.” 14 It was when Abram entered Egypt the Egyptians saw his wife was very beautiful. 15 Pharaoh’s officials saw saw her and praised her before Pharaoh, and the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s. 16 It went well for Abram because of her; he had sheep, cattle, a donkey, servants, handmaids, jennies, and camels. 17 Then the Lord struck Pharaoh and the children of his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said to him, “What is this you did to me? Why did you not tell me she is your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ and I took her for my wife? Now look, take your wife and go.” 20 Pharaoh commanded his men and dispatched him, his wife, and all he had.

Abram’s Separation from Lot
Genesis 13:8-13

8 Abram said to Lot, “There will not be strife between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds, because we men are brothers. 9 Look, all the land is before you. Separate from me. If you are for the right, I am for the left, and if you are for the left, I am for the right.” 10 Lot raised his eyes and saw all the the land of the Jordan: all of it was irrigated (before God degraded Sodom and Gomorrah) like the paradise of God and like land of Egypt entering Zoar. 11 Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan. Then Lot picked up eastward, and each separated from his brother. 12 Abram had settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot had settled among the villages of Kakar and inherited as far as Sodom. 13 Those of Sodom were very evil and sinful before the Lord.

Melichizedek
Genesis 14:14-20

14 Abram heard his nephew was captured, armed his youths born in his house (three hundred eighteen), and pursued them all the way to Dan. 15 Both he and his servants were divided at night. Then he struck them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 He brought back all of his property and had also brought back Lot his nephew and his property along with both the women and the people. 17 Then the king of Sodom went to meet him after he returned from warring against Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him at Shaveh Valley (that is, the Valley of the Kings). Then Melchizedek, King of Salem, had brought out bread and wine; he was a priest of God Most High. 18 He blessed him and said, “Blessed is Abram by God Most High. He acquired heaven and earth, 20 and blessed is God Most High, who betrayed your enemies into your hands!” Then he gave him one tenth of everything.

God’s Promise to Abram

Genesis 15:1-6

1 After these matters, the statement of the Lord was upon Abram in a vision, and he said to him, “Do not fear, Abram, I shall support you. Your reward is very good.” 2 And Abram said, “Lord God, what will you give me? I go on without sons, and Eliezer of Damascus, the son of my house, is inheriting by me.” 3 Abram said, “Look, you have given me a son, and look, the son of my house is inheriting by me.” 4 The Lord said to him, “This one will not inherit from you, but the son coming from your loins will inherit by you.” 4 He brought him outside and said to him, “Look at the sky. Count the stars, if you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram was faithful to God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

Sarah’s Presentation of Hagar

Genesis 16:1-6

1 Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not given birth by him and had an Egyptian handmaid. Her name was Hagar. 2 Sarai said to Abram, “Look, the Lord prevented me from giving birth. Enter upon my handmaid. Perhaps I shall be consoled by her.” Abram heard the voice of Sarai. 3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, brought Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid after ten years that Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan and gave the woman to Abram, her husband. 4 He entered upon Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw she conceived, she looked down on her mistress. 5 Sarai said to Abram, “My exploitation be on you! I have given my handmaid on your lap, and when she saw she conceived, she looked down on me. The Lord will judge between you and me!” 6 Abram said to Sarai, his wife, “Look, your handmaid is betrayed into your hands. Do to her whatever is fit in your eyes.” Then Sarai, her mistress, abused her, and she ran away from her.

Hagar in the Wilderness
Genesis 16:7-15

7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness on the way to Gadar. 8 He said, “Hagar, handmaid of Sarai, from where are you coming and where are you going?” She said, “I am running away from my mistress Sarai.” 9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and slave under her hand.” 10 The angel of the Lord said to her, “I will indeed multiply your offspring, and it shall not be counted out of its multitude.” 11 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Look, you conceived and are going to bear a son. Call him Ishmael because the Lord heard your enslavement. 12 He shall be a wild ass of a man. His hand against all and the hand of all against him, he shall dwell beneath all his brothers.” 13 She called the name of the Lord spoken to her and said, “You are Allah apparently,” because she said, “Alas, I still see after he saw me.” 14 Because of this, she called that well the well where the Living has seen me. Look, it is between Reqem and Gadar. 15 Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael by Abram.

God’s Covenant with Abram
Genesis 17:1-8

1 Abram was ninety-nine years old, and the Lord revealed himself to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be both fit before me and blameless, 2 and I will give my covenant between me and you and will multiply you very well.” 3 Abram fell upon his face, and God spoke with him and said to him, 4 “I, look, am setting my covenant with you, and you will be the father to a multitude of peoples. 5 Your name will no more be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham because I have given you as father to a multitude of peoples. 6 I will make you bear fruit, multiply you very well, and give you peoples. Kings shall come forth from your loins. 7 I shall set my covenant between me and you and between your offspring after you and their generations for a covenant forever. I shall be God to you and to your offspring after you. 8 I shall give you and your offspring after you the land you inhabit, all the land of Canaan as an inheritance forever, and I shall be God to them.

Sign of the Covenant
Genesis 17:10-14

10 “This is my covenant, which you all shall keep between me and all of you and among your offspring after you: circumcise each male 11 and circumcise the flesh of your foreskins. It will be the sign of the covenant between me and all of you. 12 He shall circumcise the eight-day-old among you, every male throughout all of your generations, him born of the house, him bought with money from each foreigner who is not of your offspring. 13 He shall indeed circumcise him born of your house and bought with your money. My covenant will be in all of your flesh as a covenant forever. 14 The uncircumcised male whom he does not circumcise in the flesh of his foreskin, you shall lose that soul from his people: he has annulled my covenant.”

Abraham's Hosting at the Oak of Mamre
Genesis 18:1-5

1 The Lord revealed himself to him between the oak of Mamre. He was sitting next to the tent’s entrance when the day was hot. 2 He raised his eyes and saw there were three men standing over him. He saw them, ran to meet them from the entrance of the tent, bowed upon the ground, 3 and said, “My lord, if I found mercy in your eyes, do not pass by your servant. 4 I shall set a little water. Wash your feet, and rest yourselves beneath the tree. 5 Take bits of bread, recline your hearts, and afterwards you may pass on because you have so passed by your servant.” And they said, “May you do as you said.”

Sarah Promised a Son
Genesis 18:6-15

6 Abraham hastened and ran into the tent to Sarah. He said, “Quick, knead three measures of choice flour and make a cake.” 7 Abraham had run to the herd and took a fat and good heifer and gave it to the boy, who hastened to prepare it. 8 He took the curds, the milk, and calf he prepared, and he set it before them. He was standing over them beneath the tree. They ate 9 and said to him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “Look, in the tent.” 10 He said to him, “I will surely return to you at this time when she is alive, and Sarah, your wife, will have a son.” Sarah heard at the entrance of the tent and was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were old and advanced in age; having woman’s way passed for Sarah. 12 Sarah laughed within her heart and said, “After youth is worn out for me! My lord is old.” 13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Truly, shall I bear a child—I who have aged?’ 14 Is this desire too great for the Lord? At this time I shall return to you when she is alive, and Sarah, your wife, will have a son.” 15 Sarah denied it and said, “I did not laugh,” because she was afraid. He said, “But you did laugh.”

Judgement on Sodom
Genesis 18:22-33

22 The men turned from there and went to Sodom, and Abraham still was standing before the Lord. 23 Abraham neared and said, “In one rage, are you going to degrade the righteous with the sinner? 24 If there are fifty righteous inside the town, in one rage are you going to degrade and not forgive the place because of the fifty righteous inside? 25 Far be it from you to do this deed: to kill the innocent with the guilty and the innocent be as the guilty! Far be that from you, the judge of all the earth! This judgment will not be done.” 26 The Lord answered, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous inside the town, I will forgive the whole place for their sake.” 27 Abraham answered and said, “Look, I started speaking before the Lord, and I am dust and ashes. 28 If five of the fifty righteous are lacking, are you going to degrade because of the five all the town?” And he said, “I will not degrade it if I find there forty-five.” 29 Abraham said yet again to him, “If forty are found there.” He said, “I will not degrade it if I find forty there.” 30 He said, “It will not displease the Lord, and I shall speak. If thirty are found there.” He said, “I will not degrade it if I find thirty there.” 31 He said, “Look, I have started speaking before the Lord. If twenty are found there?” He said, “I shall not degrade it, because of the twenty.” 32 He said, “It will not displease the Lord, and I shall speak only this time. If ten are found there?” He answered, “I will not degrade it, because of the ten.” 33 The Lord went when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Lot's Hosting at Sodom
Genesis 18:22-33

1 Two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot had been sitting at the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, rose to meet them, bowed with his face upon the ground, 1 and said, “I beg of all of you, my lord, turn to your servant’s house, spend the night, and wash your feet. Then rise early and go on your way.” They said, “No. We shall spend the night in the square.” 3 He pressed them well, and they turned to him and entered in his house. He made them a drink and baked them unleavened bread, and they snacked.

Confusion of the Sodomites
Genesis 18:22-33

4 They had not yet lain down, and those of the town, those of Sodom, encircled the house: from the youths up to the old, all of the people to its ends. 5 They called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Make them go out to us, and we may know them.” 6 Lot went out the door to them and had shut the door behind him. 7 Lot said to them, “Do not be evil, my brothers. 8 Look, I have two daughters whom no man has known. I shall bring them out to you, and do to them what is fit in your eyes; only to these men do nothing, for they entered under the roof of my beams.” 9 They said, “Be gone!” They said, “This one has come to lodge with us; and look, he is adjudicating us a judgement! Now we shall do worse to you than them.” Lot strove well with the men, and they almost broke the door. 10 The men stretched out their hands, brought Lot into their house, and shut the door. 11 Then the men at the house’s door were smitten by hallucinations—from the small unto the great. And they tired from searching for the door.

Lot’s Family Fleeing Sodom
Genesis 19:12-17

12 Then the men said to Lot, “What are you doing here? Bring out of this place your sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and all you have in this town. 13 For we are degrading this place because their bellow rose before the Lord and the Lord sent us to degrade it.” 14 Lot went out and spoke with his sons-in-law married to his daughters and said to them, “Rise! Get out of this place because the Lord is degrading it.” It was as if he was jesting in his sons-in-laws eyes. 15 When morning rose, the angels pressed Lot and said to him, “Rise! Take your wife and your two daughters who are found, or else you shall be smitten with the town’s sins.” 16 Lot was delayed, and the angels took his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hand of his two daughters because the Lord had pity on him. They brought him out and left him outside the town. 17 When they brought them outside, they said to him, “Save your life. Do not turn your back nor stand on any of the plain. Save yourself at the mountain, or else be destroyed.”

Pillar of Salt
Genesis 19:18-26

18 Lot told them, “I beg of all of you, my Lord. 19 Look, your servant found mercy in your eyes. Much is your kindness you did with me to make me survive. I cannot save myself at the mountain lest an evil overtake me and I die. 20 Look, this town is near to flee there. Look, it is small and I will survive.” 21 He said to him, “Look, I also set before your face this statement: I will not overthrow the town of which you spoke. 22 Quickly save yourself there because I cannot do anything until you enter there.” Because of this the town’s name was called Zoar. 23 The sun had risen over the land, and Lot was at Zoar. 24 The Lord had rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the presence of the Lord from heaven. 25 He overthrew these towns, all the plain, all the land’s inhabitants, and the land’s growth. 26 Then Lot’s wife turned behind her and became a statue made of salt.

Lot’s Family at Zoar
Genesis 19:30-38

30 Then Lot went up from Zoar, and he with his two daughters settled on the mountain. Because he feared to settle in Zoar, he settled in a den with his two daughters. 31 Then the older said to the younger, “Look, our father has aged, and there is not a man on earth to come in upon us according to the way of all the earth. 32 Come, wine will make our father drunk, we shall lie with him, and the offspring of our father will endure.” 33 The wine that night made their father drunk. The older entered and lay with her father, and he did not know her lying or her rising. 34 It was the next day the older said to the younger, “Look, I lay in the evening with my father. Wine will make him drunk tonight as well. Enter and lie with him. Go in to lie with him, and the offspring of our father will endure.” 35 The wine that night also made their father drunk. The younger entered and lay with her father, and he did not know her lying or her rising. 36 Both of Lot’s two daughters conceived from their father. 37 The older one bore a son and named him Moab, that is, the father of the Moabites up to this day. 38 The younger had borne a son as well and named him Ben-ammi, that is, the father of the Ammonites up to this day.

Abraham and Abimelech
Genesis 20:1-8

1 Abraham marched from there to the land of the south, settled between Raqem and Gadar, and Abraham resided in Gadar. 2 Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And King Abimelech of Gerar sent forth to take Sarah. 3 God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Look, you are going to die because of the woman you took because she is a man’s wife.” 4 Abimelech had not approached her. Abimelech said, “Lord, are you also going to kill the innocent? 5 Look, he had told me, ‘She is my sister.’ She also said, ‘He is my brother.’ With my heart’s wholesomeness and my hands cleanness I have done this.” 6 God said to him in the dream, “I also do know in your heart’s wholesomeness you have done this. In your wisdom also it is I you shall not sin against. Because of this, I did not let you to approach her. 7 Now return the man’s wife because he is a prophet and will pray for you, and you shall live. If you do not return her, know you shall surely die: you and all that are yours.” 8 Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their ears. The men were very afraid.

Departure from Abimelech
Genesis 20:9-18

9 Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What did you do? How have I sinned against you that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me a deed not to be done.” 10 Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see that you did this thing?” 11 Abraham said, “Because I said, ‘Is there no fear of God in this land? They will kill me on account of my wife.’ 12 However, she is truly my sister: the daughter of my father, not the daughter of my mother, and a wife to me. 13 It was when God made me go out from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you shall do for me: at every place we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’” 14 Abimelech took sheep, bulls, servants, and handmaids, gave them to Abraham, and returned to him his wife Sarah. 15 Abimelech said to Abraham, “Look, my land is before you. Settle wherever it is fitting in your eyes.” 16 To Sarah he had said, “Look, I gave a thousand pieces of silver to your brother. Look, it is also given to you since you hid the eyes of all with you and for everything you rebuked me.” 17 Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and also healed his wife and handmaids, and they bore children. 18 For the Lord had indeed locked all the front of the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
